If you drive a motor vehicle after consuming a certain level of alcohol you could be facing a criminal Charge.
Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol (PCA):
This usually starts with a breath analysis which gives a specific reading of your blood alcohol concentration. For example a mid range PCA has a range of 0.08 to less than 0.15. The limit for drivers on unrestricted licences (NOT Ps) is below 0.05. Penalties range from fines, disqualifications and mandatory Interlock to jail Sentences, depending on severity.
Driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI):
This applies if a specific blood alcohol reading cannot be obtained. Police make assessments based on the way a person looks, for example blood shot eyes, speech is slurred, smelling of alcohol, walking whilst unsteady. Penalties vary but are similar in severity to high range PCA offences.
